Renting a car in Ubud: what to know

Ubud sits up in the hills and every road out of it climbs or drops, which is why travel times from here bear little relation to map distance. Kintamani is only forty kilometres and still takes an hour and a half. Inside town, the streets around Monkey Forest are often one-way with little parking, so the smoothest pickup point is usually near the art market rather than outside a guesthouse. The upside is that from Ubud almost every northern route — terraces, temples, the lake — starts an hour closer than it does from the coast.
